Greetings From the Desk of Maria Savoia, M.D.
Welcome to the summer edition of Medical Alumni News. This issue will bring you exciting news from the UCSD School of Medicine community, along with information about upcoming events and activities.
This past June marked the culmination of the School of Medicine’s 40th Anniversary: 40 years of educating physicians, conducting groundbreaking research, and caring for patients. The celebration of this milestone served as a launching point for what we all believe will be an even more remarkable future. A variety of events were held throughout the year in celebration, including a gala at the Hyatt Aventine in La Jolla last November, a Clinical Symposium on Health Care Delivery in January, a Translational Medicine Symposium in March, a Kriegler Symposium in the spring, a program for current residents called “The Business Side of Medicine,” and a School of Medicine Birthday Party in May. As the celebration of our first 40 years as a center for medical education and biomedical research concludes, we join with our UCSD Medical Alumni family and the community to welcome a bright and promising future, with passionate innovation and compassionate care at the leading edge of medicine.

On Sunday, June 7th, the UCSD School of Medicine awarded 108 M.D. degrees to 57 men and 51 women. The keynote speaker for the ceremony was San Diego attorney John Davies, past Chairman and ex-officio member of the UC Board of Regents. A San Diego native, Davies was also a member and chairman of the San Diego Planning Commission as well as director and president of the Centre City Development Corporation in San Diego.
This year’s graduates included a diverse collection of former teachers, mothers, students with multi-generational physician ties, and even a professional soccer player. The graduates will be practicing at well-regarded institutions across the nation, such as Harvard, Johns Hopkins and Cleveland Clinic as well as the Medical Centers at UC Davis, Irvine, and San Francisco. Twenty percent of the class will remain at UC San Diego. Forty percent of the class will enter primary care specialties.
As part of the UCSD School of Medicine’s 40th anniversary, commencement also included an all-class march, where alumni from each class carried banners representing their graduation year while marching in the processional.

The UCSD School of Medicine has once again been ranked among the nation’s best, according to US News & World Report. This year, the university was recognized as the #15 School of Medicine in the country for research, as well as #26 in primary care (up from a #35 ranking in 2008). These outstanding rankings reflect our faculty’s dedication – not only to training the next generation of physicians and researchers – but to the vital work they do in the labs, hospitals and medical clinics every day.
Additionally, two of UCSD’s programs – AIDS and Drug & Alcohol Abuse – were recognized as among the top 10 of their kind. At #8 in the nation, the UCSD School of Medicine’s AIDS program conti nues to stand on the front lines of patient care in San Diego and abroad. The Drug & Alcohol Abuse program was ranked #10 this year. The UCSD team of psychiatrists has changed the face of research on drug and alcohol abuse, as they continue to work with patients who suffer from these debilitating diseases. |

Bud Whipple Endowed Memorial Scholarship
The Bud Whipple Endowed Memorial Scholarship recognizes a medical student who, despite adversity in life, has demonstrated an unselfish commitment to others and has displayed exceptional human kindness to their colleagues and patients. The Bud Whipple Scholarship for the Class of 2011 has been awarded to Cassie Kline. “Cassie is an inspiration to her classmates and is greatly admired by all who know her,” said Dr. Carolyn Kelly, Associate Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs for the School of Medicine. “Despite challenges, Cassie has a bright and positive outlook on life and is committed to giving back to her community.”
Carrlene Harper Memorial Scholarship
The Carrlene Harper Memorial Scholarship, which recognizes a medical student who exhibits an outstanding commitment to community service, has been awarded to Zulma Galvan. In her first two years of Medical School, Zulma has not only managed the Women’s Health clinic at the UCSD Student-Run Free Clinic, but also participated in the Border Health Project, which provides medical assistance to San Diego County’s migrant workers. Zulma’s community service extends outside the San Diego area as well, as she has organized and managed several programs that have helped encourage underrepresented and at-risk students. The Medical Alumni Association is happy to recognize Zulma for embodying the dedication and passion for helping others for which the Carrlene Harper Scholarship stands.
Thank you to our medical alumni who help support these scholarship funds. These important scholarships would not be possible without your generosity. If you are interested in making a contribution or obtaining more information, please visit http://som.ucsd.edu/giving. |
