The host hotel is the Grand Hotel Karel V. Once a medieval monestary, this luxurious hotel is located within walking distance of the University Hall, Central Station and only 30-45 minutes from Amsterdam and Schiphol airport. The 121 individually decorated rooms blend historical and modern design, with high-speed Internet, cable/satellite TV, terraces or balconies, and free-standing bathtubs.
Grand Hotel Karel V opened in 1999 and is the first five-star hotel in Utrecht. The building complex dates back to the 14th century and was home to the Country Commandery of the German Knightly Order for approximately 450 years. Karel V and his sister Maria of Hungary lived here in 1546.
TAXI from Schiphol Airport to Grand Hotel Karel V
Taxi ranks are located right in front of Schiphol Plaza Shopping Centre. The journey from the airport to the hotel will take approximately 45 minutes, subject to traffic. The approximate fare will be about € 45,- to € 50,-.
TRAIN from Schiphol Airport to Grand Hotel Karel V
Since the spring of 2006, there has been a direct train connection from Schiphol to Utrecht Central Station in less than 30 minutes. The Schiphol station is situated directly below the airport.
Train tickets
Train tickets for domestic travel are available from the yellow ticket machines near the platforms at Schiphol Plaza. Tickets (for domestic and international travel) are also available from the ticket offices, which are situated close to the red/white-checked cube at Schiphol Plaza. Staff at the ticket offices will also be able to provide you with train departure information.
Night train
If you are departing/arriving at night or in the early morning, the NS night network could be the answer. The night trains travel once an hour between Utrecht CS - Amsterdam CS - Schiphol - Leiden CS - Den Haag CS - Delft and Rotterdam CS and vice versa. After arrival at Utrecht Central Station
Grand Hotel Karel V is located within 7 minutes walking distance of the central railway station.

- In the station hall, follow the signs for Hoog Catharijne shopping centre
- Having passed the ABN AMRO cash machines, turn right,
‘Godebaldkwartier’ exit
- At the end, at the bottom of the escalator, turn left
- Cross the road (two sets of traffic lights) and turn right (across the road again)
- Continue to walk straight ahead and you will see Grand Hotel Karel V on your left after some 150 metres
