Advanced Training for MBCT and MBSR Teachers: Embodying Mindful Presence and Investigating Mindful Inquiry

Faculty: Susan Woods, LICSW and Char Wilkins, LCSW

June 9-14, 2013 • EarthRise Retreat Center, Petaluma, CA

Late Spring 2014 – To Be Determined

Early-Bird Registration Fee: $1095 + Room & Board

This advanced training is for MBCT and MBSR teachers who wish to deepen their understanding of universal principles for teaching mindfulness-based interventions. As such, the focus for this training is less about teaching to the structure of MBCT and/or MBSR and more about intentionally embodying mindful presence and strengthening the facilitation of mindful inquiry.  Inquiry is both a practice and a skill.  As a practice it is the ability to convey the philosophic underpinnings of mindfulness with an integrity that invites our participants to embark on a journey of discovery about the relevance of mindfulness practice as an approach in the prevention of depression relapse and for stress reduction.   As a skill, mindful inquiry, demonstrates a willingness to embody the spirit of mindfulness with an oral congruity of where that understanding rests.  The training is highly interactive and highlights the necessity of personal practice as a platform from which to teach.

Training

The heart of this training program focuses on developing skills that strengthen an embodied mindful presence, mindful inquiry, and examines the theme, rationale, intention and practice skills for each of the eight MBCT and MBSR sessions. Over the course of the program we will pay attention to nurturing specific qualities associated with mindfulness, such as a present moment directed focus, an awareness that represents an inner and outer listening and a compassionate stance that incorporates a willingness to meet our teaching edges as they arise with generosity and kindness.  This training offers the time to nurture these qualities through silent mindfulness practice, through simulated patient-teacher encounters, discussion and personal supervision from the retreat leaders.

This advanced teacher training will be led by experienced clinicians, mindfulness teachers and retreat leaders, Susan Woods, LICSW and Char Wilkins, LCSW.

Registration will be limited to 40 participants for this advanced training in order to provide an environment that promotes in depth learning in an atmosphere of intimacy and shared experience.

Target Audience

This 5-day advanced teacher training intensive is intended for MBCT and MBSR teachers who have completed a 5 or 7-day foundational professional training in MBCT and/or MBSR.  Participants will have taught at least one 8-week MBCT or MBSR course and be licensed in their health field.  All participants will have an ongoing personal mindfulness practice and have attended at least one 7-day silent teacher led mindfulness meditation retreat; MBCT and MBSR professional trainings are not considered silent mindfulness retreats. Teachers of other MBIs are encouraged to apply if they fulfill the pre-requisites for this training or can demonstrate a similar training trajectory in their MBI.

Objectives

At the completion of this training, the participants should be able to:

  • demonstrate proficiency in embodying present moment directed skills
  • demonstrate the centrality of teaching with such interpersonal skills as warmth, acceptance, compassion, loving kindness, equanimity and joy
  • define the components and characteristics of inquiry
  • skillfully articulate the delivery and practice of inquiry
  • name mindfulness skills that create a compassionate platform for clients to experience themselves and their symptoms
  • describe how the lens of mindfulness offers a radical perceptual shift for approaching difficult modes of mind and mood states
  • describe the theme, rationale, intention and practice skills embedded in the MBCT/MBSR programs
  • engage confidently in group process from a mindfulness perspective
  • articulate appropriate professional and personal ethics

Participant Guidelines

  • Advanced degree in a health-related field
  • Attendance at a 5-day professional MBCT training or a 7-day professional MBSR training
  • Teaching experience; the facilitation of at least one MBSR or MBCT group
  • Personal on-going mindfulness meditation practice
  • Have attended a minimum of one 7-day silent teacher led mindfulness meditation retreat

Needs Assessment

The utilization of mindfulness in a clinical context is a burgeoning area of study and practice in the mental health field in the past few years. The number of research articles, books and popular press articles on the topic is growing exponentially each year and the demand for quality professional training in these practices and techniques is growing each year. The first level training in MBCT has been offered for the past four years through the UC San Diego Center for Mindfulness, with increasing enrollments each year, as well as at other sites across the country and around the world. This has led to a growing number of practitioners who have some experience in teaching MBCT and are seeking further opportunities for professional development in the field.
