Critical Care Summer Session

UC San Diego Health is a leader in critical care research and education in the United States. This summer session is designed to provide the latest cutting edge information to critical care practitioners.

The faculty includes outstanding physicians and nurses involved in the development and implementation of innovations in critical care.

The target audience for this program includes critical care specialists, emergency physicians, cardiologists, pulmonary physicians, general surgeons, physician assistants, nurses and allied health professionals involved in the care of critically ill and injured patients.


After completing this activity participants should be able to:

  • Describe strategies used for the interdisciplinary approach to managing complex critical care problems
  • Describe evidence-based practice related to the nursing and critical care management of the surgical and trauma patient
  • Identify early interventions and new therapies in the management of acute stroke
  • Describe cutting edge assessment and treatment strategies in the management of the critically ill patient with cardiac disease
  • Discuss interdisciplinary management strategies as they apply to case reviews of critical trauma patients

This 2 hour workshop will provide the training needed to perform and interpret ultrasound imaging in the ICU. Participants will benefit from guided, focused skill stations, featuring live models and experienced instructors to emphasize key learning points. Extensive faculty coverage ensures a significant hands-on experience for each participant.

Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Burns and Acute Care Surgery is a division of the Department of Surgery made up of specially trained experts in the care of critically ill or injured people. The division operates five integrated areas:
